Course Overview
In Middle School World History, Semester B, you’ll learn about major historical events
that took place in the world. In the first unit, you will learn about the developments and
characteristics of classical civilizations in Asia and the Americas. In the second unit,
you’ll trace the development of classical Greece and Rome. In the third unit, you’ll
analyze the development and characteristics of the early medieval period. In the fourth
unit, you’ll learn about the growth of civilizations in Africa and Asia during the late
medieval period. In the last unit, you’ll analyze the transformation of western Europe
during the late Middle Ages.
Course Goals
By the end of this course, you will be able to do the following:
Analyze the development and characteristics of classical civilizations in Asia and the Americas.
Examine the development of classical Greece and Rome.
Analyze the development of the early medieval period.
Analyze the development of the late medieval period in Africa and Asia.
Analyze the development of the late medieval period in the West.

Unit 1: Classical Civilizations in Asia and the Americas
Summary
This unit focuses on the classical civilizations in Asia and the Americas. In this unit,
you’ll analyze the development and characteristics of classical civilizations in China and
India. You’ll also examine the development and characteristics of pre-Columbian
Mesoamerican and Andean civilizations.
Unit 2: Classical Greece and Rome
Summary
This unit focuses on the development of classical Greece and Rome. You’ll examine the
development and characteristics of Hellenistic Greece and the Roman Republic. You’ll
then analyze the rise and decline of the Roman Empire. You will also learn about the
spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Finally, you’ll analyze the influence of
Greek and Roman civilizations on modern civilization.
Unit 3: The Early Medieval Period
Summary
This unit focuses on the development of the early medieval period. First, you’ll analyze
the causes of the decline of the classical empires and describe conditions after the
decline. You will trace the origins and growth of the Byzantine Empire and learn about
the growth of western Europe in the early Middle Ages. You’ll also explore the beliefs of
Islam and how it spread in Europe and the Middle East. Finally, you will analyze the
development of civilization in China, Japan, and Korea during the Middle Ages.
Unit 4: The Late Medieval Period: Africa and Asia
Summary
This unit focuses on the development of civilizations in Africa and Asia during the late
medieval period. First, you’ll trace the development of civilizations in Africa in the Middle
Ages. Next, you will learn about the influence of Islam in India and Southeast Asia.
Finally, you’ll analyze the causes and effects of the Mongol invasions on Russia, China,
and Islamic civilizations.
Unit 5: The Late Medieval Period: The West
Summary
This unit focuses on the development of civilizations in the west during the late medieval
period. You’ll examine the growth of western Europe during the late Middle Ages and
analyze the development of France, England, and Spain as nation-states. You’ll also
analyze how western Europe became a powerful region.
