Course Overview
This one-semester elective course is intended as a practical, hands-on guide to
introduce you to the field of music appreciation. You’ll first identify elements and
patterns in music and learn to identify various elements of musical notation. Next, you’ll
explore the history and evolution of music from the Middle Ages through to the modern
era. Then, you’ll learn about the influence of music on society and culture. Finally, in the
last few lessons you’ll learn of the various compositional and expressive devices and
how to evaluate a concert.
Course Goals
By the end of this course you will:
• Describe and identify the elements of music and musical notation.
• Trace the history and evolution of music from ancient times through to the twentieth century.
• Describe the contributions of popular music artists and composers.
• State the influence of music on society and culture.
• Draw parallels between music and other art forms such as dance, theater, and literature.
• Describe the utility of music in television, cinema, and advertising.
• Describe various career paths available in music.
